History
Team 1098 was formed in the fall of 2002 at Lafayette High School. This is the team’s third season of competing at the St. Louis Regional FIRST Competition. Lafayette obtained grants from NASA and financial support from Maritz Corporation, Dathorn Internet Services, and NetEffects Corporation during its first two years. This year, the team is being supported by funds from Rockwood School District, Lafayette High School, Pfizer Corporation, and FIRST. Rockwood Summit High School was invited to join the team the first year, since it had not obtained funds to start a team. This year, Marquette and Eureka, Rockwood’s other two high schools, were invited to join the team. The team has grown to nearly 40 students. Mentors include engineers and other adults from the community and teachers from the participating high schools.
The Rockwood Robotics Team has three main goals:
1. To inspire participants to become the inventors and engineers of the future through the design and construction of a robot for competition in an event that changes each year
2. To enable students to learn critical life skills such as working in teams of diverse people, communication, critical thinking and analysis, and professionalism
3. To provide students with the opportunity to learn how to work within real-world constraints such as limited financial resources and time.
Although students meet throughout the year, the actual robot build period is only six weeks!
